But access_log has 200s from Google-Sitemaps

Today I noticed the following in Webmaster Tools:

Verification status: NOT VERIFIED
Last attempt Oct 31, 2007: We were unable to verify your file due to a server timeout.

The meta tag is still intact and I've clicked the Verify button over and over with no success. I always get the above error. I'm able to access the site just fine and mon.itor.us is consistently accessing it at the 1 second mark. Also apache2's access_log now has many successful 200 status accesses from Google-Sitemaps/1.0. Is anyone else having this kind of trouble?

Yep, lots of those reports are flying. Looks like they might have some kind of a bug in the code - maybe just in their GWT reporting code.

For what it's worth, I've never been able to verify my site (file or meta) since it started.

Yes, I'm also having this problem - html file is navigatable on the site, meta verify tag is still intact, but it still says that the server is timing out. I checked on 11/1 or 11/2 and was able to view my site stats, but not as of today.
