Here's the way I see it working in most instances. You publish an article. That article gets indexed. Then someone else publishes your article. That one gets indexed too. Now it will come down to who has the most "power" to start with.
But, after a while, the originator of the article usually picks up a natural progression of backlinks which the copied articles do not. So, over time, your article should trump the copies.
But; if you are republishing the text of the article, not the whole page, then there may not be any problems, specially if the articles are on the short side.
So, if I understand this correctly, there shouldn't be a problem with a duplicate content penalty.

OrangeCrate - pageoneresults' comment may well be correct in terms of SEO, however you should bear in mind other issues such as copyright, licensing rights, terms of contract etc before you consider publishing the articles on your website before they're published elsewhere.
What agreement do you have with the trade mag? Are you being paid to write the articles? The mag may well be (justifiably) p'd off if you publish articles written for them on your own site first.
Unless you have permission from the trade mag to go ahead and put the articles on your website first, I'd suggest you publish a short excerpt of each article on your website post-publication and link to the online trade mag so as to avoid any possible duplicate penalty.
Provided the trade mag continues to put your byline on each article, any search for you should still show up. If I were you, I'd ask them for a link back to your site as well. :)
I agree, a sense of fair play has to be in all this too.
