Google site maps- faster indexing of new pages?

From your experience, will google index new content faster if you use site maps?

For example (I have a news site) If I use site-maps and I update it every time I post a new article, will google index it faster?

I think you need one more step - after you update your Google Sitemap file, then either submit again manually, or ping Google automatically according to their instructions on this page:

[google.com...]

I have heard that this seems to help speed new page spidering. That's what it's supposed to do, after all.
