So I dropped adsense in favor of another advertising company, which pays me 4 times the amount i was bringin in with google...

A week after dropping google I get bumped from position 1 to position 5 in google search for my keyword...

coincidence? I think not!

Definitely yes, unless you switched to an agency that sells text links, in which case maybe you got caught up in Google's crackdown on that practice. See the "Google Search News" forum for more on this.

coincidence? I think not!

In the Google Search News forum, I've seen posts by members who've thought that AdSense hurt their rankings.

At this point, your "coincidence? I think not!" is merely blind conjecture, but you can always try switching ad code back and forth over a longer period to see if there really is a pattern.

yes, its an interesting datapoint, but not even a theory.
Reinstall adsense, let it run for a bit and observe the results.
Remove it after you have some decent data and observe the results.
Then come back and report again :)
Otherwise there is no way to differentiate it from a 'coincidence' :)

Conspiracy theories about connections between AdWords or AdSense and organic search are a dime a dozen - but not worth any webmaster time or energy in my opinion. Whatever else you may think, Google is NOT a stupid company. Doing something like this would sabotage their core competency, the engine that drives their company.

My advice is to let go of the idea of any connection between AdWords/Adsense and organic search -- get back to improving your business. Just because event B comes soon after event A is no proof that A causes B. This is the logical fallacy called "post hoc ergo propter hoc", one of the major pitfalls to accurate analysis of any situation in life, business or anywhere.

If people could raise their ranking with inserting AdSense, oh boy, there will be too many millionaires without working too hard.

Don't tell the folks at Wikipedia about this, or they'll place AdSense on their pages and own Google's search results.:-)
