Forum Moderators: Robert Charlton & goodroi
I have a website in a very competitive market and have done as suggested by some on this forum: read until your eyes hurt. Well, they do – believe me! After getting tired of waiting for my website programmer to complete seemingly easy tasks, I took over and now use FrontPage 2000 to do all the programming.
A few questions:
#1 Concerning internal links on my website: should I use the full URL:
[mysite.com...] or just pageone.html for the internal link?
#2 As an ecommerce site, I have an SSL Cert. When I first took over as web programmer last year, for some unknown reason I made some internal links "Https" to regular & store product pages. Upon being told this was unnecessary and potentially problematic – I changed all the links to Http. Now, almost all my GG indexed pages are supplemental, dating back to Feb 2005, few are dated in 2006, and many are Https. Is it possible I have been penalized for duplicate content and my new pages are sandboxed?
#3 I must mention that my sales volumn is very low, but I am spidered nearly every day by the Googlebot. My main keywords result in page 1 to 4 on GG and I do have customers "finding me" via a search on my keywords.
Thank you for your time. Sorry for the verbosity.
StillTrying
Historically with Google if you did not have absolute links somewhere on your site there would be more times that your site is not fully indexed.
My sites have a mix of absolute and relative (which many think is a no-no). A set of absolute links to your own pages in a sitemap.htm page will at least give you "backlinks" to your own site. In the past this was probably an SEO trick! I do have 301 redirects for non-WWW to WWW.
Then there is sitemap.xml and Google sitemaps to consider.
Thanks for all the replies.
Vadim: I checked a dozen or so links and they are all full [mysite.com...] etc.
Rt Readin: I am not planning on any moves for several years.
Bumpski: (I'm an old snowskier) – I have a sitemap page – with a link to it on the top left side of my homepage (using a menu bar of important page links). The sitemap uses all full URL's as above. Question: I thought I read somewhere that it is not good to have more than one internal link to each page on your website--> my left page index and top and bottom page indexes are the same for every page --> Problem?
Again… My site only has a few #3 Pageranks and low traffic…. it is 1.5 years old and is spidered almost every day by GG, MSN, Yahoo, etc.
Enjoy your day and thanks again for your help.
Use full URL
What do you think about the dup content with Https and Http links mentioned in #2 of post #1?
I believe that you are correct and this is a kind of the canonical problem. Https and http means different URLs because they use the different ports and may supply different pages. It is similar to URLs with and without www. Try to 301 redirect from https to http
