Duplicate pages with joomla - what do I do?

I have been adding a lot of content pages lately to a new site which is powered by joomla. Unfortunately, I am now finding out, Joomla's database structure many times creates duplicate pages. for example, I have www.site.com/news/widget/widget.html and also www.site.com/news/widget-2.html

they are both the same page, but because I have SEO friendly (hah!) turned on, it gives duplicate pages. Some have /widgets-3.html and even /widgets-4.html.

According to all I can read about in Joomla forums, this is the nature of the beast, and no one has a solution until they re-write the code.

Is this going to kill me with google? Any suggestions?
