HTML entities in meta tags

Hi everyone! Does anyone know if Google (and the other major search engines) accept HTML entities in the meta tags?

I do see HTML entities in some Google results - reproduced literally and not converted to the intended character. For this reason, I don't use HTML entities in meta tags, title elements, alt attributes and the like.

I'm not certain about what's correct in theory, but in practice, I want to avoid showing "geek" to the general Google user.
