I came across a different search result presentation when searching < a single word >. It split the results into 3 groups with a horizontal line between each.

Is this something new? or have I just missed it because of the terms i search?

This sounds like a layout I saw Google testing before they introduced Universal Search - interesting to hear that it's still being used. What I saw split the page with groups that had held results that were for different possible meanings or user intentions behind the search word.

I've noticed this resulting coming back with increasinging frequency over the past couple of weeks.

In contrast to Universal Search, this layout is not being used to offer up different media types. It's used for disambiguation... which, as Ted said, is dealing with alternative meanings or intentions for the same word.

I suspected that and tried some other "ambigious" words but didn't get that layout. That could really shake up the 1 page of results for such terms if it starts to appear more frequently. Only 3 to 4 webpages appear for each version of the term. Page 2 goes back to normal display.

Sorry about dropping the search term in there.

I've seen that once or twice. A test, maybe?
