Site Command and page count at directory levels

Greetings,
Looking for a bit of help.

In most cases - when I use the command "site:*(oursite)*.com directoryXYZ" - a correct result is returned. However, for some of our directories, the result returned by Google is way off.

Example: One directory has 1012 file or pages in it. The Google site command will return "Results 1 - 10 of about 9,160".

Previous I had moved these files from one directory to another using a 301 redirect. The 301 redirect is still in place.

The counts seem most off when a 301 redirect has been used and the page count for a directory is over 1000.

Am I doing something wrong? Anyone else experiencing such problems? Is the 301 redirect causing this issue? Should I drop the 301 redirect? It has been > 6 months since the 301 has been in place.

Any tips or help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
