Google Webmaster Tools - Faster Crawl Rate Option

I was wondering if anyone could help to clarify the functionality in Google's Webmaster Tools console of the "Crawl Rate."

My current speed is NORMAL, and I have the option to make the crawl rate SLOWER which I don't think I would want to do at this point.

At what point is the option to make crawl rate FASTER made available to a website? And what positive effects would this have? Just more indexing of pages?

Thanks.

I'm not sure what specific factors Google measures before they give you that option - but it does depend on whether their metrics say your server can handle it, as well as whether they feel that investing the extra resources for your website would be warranted.

Even then, not everyone who chooses "faster" actually gets faster. It's just that you've given them permission for a faster crawl rate, should they so decide.
