How long for a 301 re-direct to show in Google?

It's been 8 months already

Hi

we 301 re-directed a site in January from widgets.com/blue to bluewidgets.com but we are still seeing the old site in Google search rankings. We do occasionally see the new address in the search rankings but these revert back to the old within a couple of days.

Just wondering how long it usually takes for Google to completely move over to showing new web addresses after a 301?

Cheers

January is too long ago, IMO - much too long. I'd say check your set up for technical errors.

Check that all of your internal links do point to the new URLs.

Run Xenu LinkSleuth over the site to check for errors.

Make sure that non-www redirects to www (or vice versa) for all pages, and it is a 301.

Make sure that the redirect from the old URLs to the new really is a 301 redirect. A 302 redirect will be a very big problem.

Make sure that there is no redirection chain of any sort to get from one URL to another: the redirect occurs in one step, not multiple steps.

Make sure that you link back to your index page as "/", and not as a named index page.

The old URLs usually continue to show up as Supplemental Results for about a year after the redirect is put in place.

The new URLs should have appeared in the results within a few months. Too much time has now elapsed.

I completely rebuilt my site last September and 301'd thousands of pages. It took approx. 3 months to kick in and by early January it was cooking.
