I have noticed that randomly, the SERP links don't go directly, but via a Google-hosted redirection page. This seems to be completely random, and I have even noticed that SOME links on the same SERP can have this.
Shed any light on this?

This occurs when Google is specifcally testing some facet of user interaction with their SERPs. To us, it appears random and usually short-lived, because they only test until they get a statistically significant amount of data. At their volume, that happens pretty fast.
