How Does Google Treat Backlinks

What is the process and when/how does it affect rankings?

I have been hearing so much about backlinks and how they can affect Google rankings.

Me personally I have yet to experience the positive changes in Pagerank and Rankings that I hear so much about and I am wondering if someone with experience on this can explain to me the process?

I am in a very competitive market and I have been told by many that I need to go and get backlinks to improve my position on Google as well as other search engines.

About a month ago I started to obtain relevant one way links from PR 2,3 and 4 sites using a keyword phrase as anchor text for the word I want to improve on ranking.

When I went to check my position this morning I noticed I actually dropped quite a bit in rankings on all engines for this particular keyword I am trying to improve on.

Is this normal? What is the length of time before these backlinks kick in and take affect on rankings, if at all they do? Can they have an adverse affect if done wrong?

I was told because they are one way links they cannot hurt you even if you did it wrong.

Can anybody provide me with the process meaning from when you start link building to when you start seeing improvement in rankings on Goolge?

yes, if your site is new, your ranking will be up and down for sometimes until it get more trust in Google's eyes.

For backlink building, you should exchange links with only relevant sites REGARDLESS of its PR. (it will help u a lot if the title and content of the link pages contain the keywords that you are targeting.)

Best wishes.

A month is not a long time for many sites, change may be around the corner.

On the other hand, it would be a mistake to confine your 'seo' simply to link building; you need to consider many other factors if you are to do well - especially if the niche is competitive. And concentrating on a single keyword is very dangerous indeed.

Start with content - is your site genuinely better than the sites above it in the serps?

If not (and even if it is!), then work on increasing and improving.

Then there's a couple of hundred other areas to consider, then get back to link building ...

The serps are always relative - and your successful rivals will be doing much more than link building.

So then....in real time, how long reasonably should I give to know exactly the new backlinks I obtained has worked or not?

Check to see when the linking page is freshly cached by Google. Positive effects can kick in within a day, in my experience, and they can also grow over time as that backlink gets some age to it.

A lot depends on how often your site gets spidered, but depending on your niche, may depend to some extent on how often your rivals get spidered. The full effects will be dleivered by the time one 'cycle' of relevant sites has been completed.

But it's all dynamic; and if link building is all you are doing, don't expect too much.

Actually link building is not the only thing I am doing....Its the only thing left to be done.

My site is ready to go fully optimized, about 2 years old. I was told by many have everything it takes to rank except links.

So if that is the case I am looking for real life experiences as to how to rank well after links are taken into affect.

I went out and got PR 2,3 and 4's. Also found a great authority site PR 8 with several internal links of 6's and 7's.

Thing is its only been about 3 weeks or so since I start getting links. How long does this cycle take before hopefully I see results?

As stated earlier the weird thing is I actually dropped quite a bit for my keyword that I am promoting, but I think it was because also at the same time I did a redesign to my pages. No url changes or anything just cosmetic work.

In my industry when I compare apples to apples the only thing I am missing to rank like the others is backlinks.

If that is the case, and I have better quality links as well as quantity, how long does it take to either rank as well as them or better?

I do realize this is a tough question, one in which can have precise answers but a ballpark guess would be appreciated.
