Yeah, I was ranking number 1, and now my site is nowhere to be seen because some independent search engine has cached my page, has allowed Google to see it, and as a result has dropped my site and decided that the site is the originator of my content.

Now get this, Google sitemaps has crawled my site a couple of days ago.

I guessing, hoping even, that google will realise somehow and reinstate our page back at number 1.

Does anybody have any experience of this?

Have you read this thread? It sounds a lot like your problem.

And no, just waiting is not usually effective. Google spiders, indexes and caches many pages that it doesn't rank well. The thread I linked to is available on our Hot Topics area [webmasterworld.com], which is always pinned to the top of the Google Search forum's index page.
