Redesign and New Backlinks Cause a Rankings Drop?

Hello All

I have a 2 1/2 year old site that needed a redesign. While I was at it I also went out at the same time and started on getting one way backlinks.

It has been about two weeks that I have completed both and I noticed my rankings have been falling for my major keyword pharase then coming back a bit only to be falling further down again in the rankings.

Is this normal? How long can it be before I see any positive effects for getting extra backlinks?

Really confused here. I keep hearing backlinks can only help not hurt but it appears to be going in the wrong direction since I started.

Help!

If you have changed lots of things at once you may never know which ones are having what effect.

If the site redesign meant that many pages now have new URLs then that will be a major factor.

How has your internal linking changed? That affects the flow of PR.

Have you got any canonical problems, causing Duplicate Content filtering?
