How does google assign PR to images?

What do "we" know about the means by which Google assigns PR to images?

I now realise that Google has always had a preference for the album thumbnails of my picture gallery (based on one of the bigger open source projects) but since I've resized them all recently they've lost their former ranking and I'm left wondering whether they'll ever recover...
