Images hosted remotely at amazon s3 - not in Image Search

Has anyone hosted there images remotely at amazon s3 and had them indexed on Google image search? Is there a setting at amazon that you have to change to allow the bots to index the images? I'm wondering if Amazon does this on purpose so as to save bandwidth costs unless you ask them to allow the bots. Is this how it works, or is there some other way that you go about getting Google to index the images?

This is a good question. I'd assume that any images you hope to bring you search traffic would be better hosted locally, and not on S3, but I have no direct experience and cannot locate any good references.
