Google news in SERPs - should be country specific?

I find the news results in google serps pretty annoying. If I want news i will use BBC or Google News, I dont need them cluttering up the results.

Also the news stories should be country specific. For example if you search on google.co.uk for "mobile phones" the three news stories you get are:

A story about Iraq's Cell Phone Licenses
A story about parents complaining about mobile phones in schools in australia
A story about cell phone advertisements in Singapore

I doubt that many people in the UK would interested in any of those stories.

Come on google, leave the news for the news page, or at least make the stories relevant.

I agree with your criticism. I'll bet this is a future direction - it just makes sense.

I totally agree. I do a lot of research and spend time on the news search. Try looking up anything that has to do with mortgage rates or banking and you end up weeding through many countries to find what you are looking for.
