I registered a domain several years ago before I knew what I was doing. I now have a copyright issue with the domain name. I need to dump the domain soon.
It ranks very well and makes me about $600 per month in AdSense. Google visits every day or two.
My question is this:
If I use a 301 redirect to another domain (a new one), how soon could I expect Google to have the brand new domain ranking as well? I have no experience in doing something like this.
As I said, I need to dump the domain soon. How long do you think the working 301 has to be in effect for my rankings to carry over to the new site?
Thank you,
Steve

To elaborate on what Miamacs said... 301s are effective only as long as you keep the redirect in place.
You need to control the DNS of the domain in order to do a 301. Once you no longer own the domain, your old links won't be redirected.
Get as many of your old links changed while you still control the old domain.
You might also ask the trademark owner for an extension (You said "copyright," but this sounds like a trademark issue). If you explain to them that your site's url won't be displaying their trademark... and that the extension will motivate you to remove their trademark from many sites that had been linking to you... they may bite and give you an extension.
They may or may not understand that those links could drive traffic to any new site they might build on the domain... but I'd try to avoid that subject if possible. ;)
