Google images - improving the value of these hits

Hi, I keep getting hits on Google images but have not got much idea on how to improve this type of hit, does anyone have any advice to give?

I would look in my stats and find what page that image lands on and do some marketing above the fold before the person has to scroll down. Also make sure (if applicable) that the image that they are looking for is above the fold so they will less likely to click on the "See full-size image" on top, giving more time for them to absorb some of your content.

Could I take a step back and confirm what a hit from Google images actually means?

Has someone typed in 'widget' and my image alt text matches on 'widget' - is it that simple or is there more involved?

Someone types in a search term on Google image search, the first image(s) presented include those from your site, and a searcher then clicks on it/them, thereby reaching your site.
My experience of such searches is that they are extremely low value. (About 5% of conventional searches in terms of cash generated from sales.)

IMO that is a must if you are getting a good level of traffic. It can make a big difference in keeping the surfer on your site. What you do to keep them is down to you.
