Up until a few years ago, PR and rankings were updated once a month. Beginning in 2003, Google dropped the monthly update, and began a more or less continuous update, bringing in new sites and changing rankings based on new content/links on an almost daily basis.

The general feeling is that Google updates PR continuously as it finds new links, and old links dissappear. When you hear about a PR update on boards like this one, they are talking about a toolbar PR update - what you see on the Google toolbar, which is typically updated every two to three months.

No one (except at G) is sure how accurate TBPR actually is, and how current it is compared to what Google is actually using.

I noticed a lot of banned sites are getting PR but not appearing on the index.

Anyone have any update on that?

Visible PageRank is updated whenever Google feels up to it. Typically every three months.

It may be a misnomer, when people say that Google has an unpublished PageRank calculation that is used to calculate the SERPs. This used to be true in the past, but Google’s servers now collect, crunch, and update data continuously. Part of that data, which Google collects and crunches, are the factors or variables used to determine PageRank. However, how those same variables are used to calculate PageRank and how they are used to calculate the rankings are likely quite different. This is because we think that Google assigns a different weight to each of its 100+ ranking variables when calculating the SERPs, a much more complex calculation than PageRank. So, it may be more correct to say that Google frequently updates the individual variables that make-up PageRank.

Wow, it's been that long since the monthly Google dance. Seems like yesterday. I loved those updates. Life was so simple then. It was like pulling the handle on a slot machine then eagerly waiting to see the final result (tho if course it took longer) But in a few days you knew where you stood. You could get to work on site improvements then watch to see how you did the next month.

There have been updates since though. Bourbon and Jagger were in 2005 (were there more?) But now they drag on and on till they just wear a person down.
