Can too many of the same keyword kill a search ranking?

A client of mine runs a local directory site in < one particular state >. Its basically a directory of "State" businesses. The site says the state's name a lot of times. For instance

"State" hair salons
"State" dentists
"State" architects

Can repeating a word like "State" hurt their search ranking, or will it just have a neutral effect?

you may get hit yes, and there is no magical number.

In my experience, keyword repitition is the leading cause of the 950 or end of google penalty

If you are placing "State" 50 times on each page you may want to clean that up. You could cut back use of the term and still have a page rank well for services in that state.

Nippi -

You mentioned this in your last reply -

"In my experience, keyword repitition is the leading cause of the 950 or end of google penalty"

- What do you mean when you say "950" or "end of google penalty"?

Thanks!

Skinwalker,

Do a site/forum search using the link at the top of the page for "950 penalty" and you'll find a number of threads that discuss it in great length.
