Google's searches in Nielsen/Netratings report

I read report from Nielsen/NetRatings about search growth in U.S.

In this report is stated, that in March'06 Google's searches are 2.9 bilion. My question is - how to define "searches"? Are they similar to pageviews? If not, IMHO it is realy hard to establish the amount of searches.
