Will a subdomain penalty affect the main domain?

If the sub-domain violates google webmaster guideline; does ban the domain from its index?

Google treats subdomains just like any full domain (for 99.9% of purposes).

So a banned subdomain will not mean damage to the 'main' domain.

On the other hand, if the two are interlinked to any degree and / or share many links with other domains (both quite likely!), then the main domain may be damaged - on the 'bad neighborhood' principle, not because the domain was a 'sub'.
