I started off with a link exchange with a site a while back. The sites are in related industries and so doing a link exchange, made sense.
It basically was 1 content link from my content pageS to the site index page. The site linked from their homepage and a link was placed on their content pageS to my index page as well. So multiple links for multiple links.
Now, since the site has gone back on their agreement, their homepage link to my site is gone but they seem to be generating dynamic content, each page with a link to my site to the point where I have hundreds of links from their site to my own and only about 20-30 from my site to theirs.
Now I suspect this is pretty much a Run of Site link and is causing me problems. Am I right?

If you had those links in place for a long time and previously they were benefiting you, than having them ignored all of a sudden can cause a ranking drop that feels like a penalty - but it's not really a penalty, just a shift in how your backlinks are weighted.
Links are good. Worrying about someone "going back on" a deal because they give you more links is like worrying about finding a $20 bill in the pocket of your pants you are taking out of the laundry.
