Incoming links from Supplemental Pages

Why is this happening?

Okay, I got an odd thing on one of my sites.

I ocassionally do a search for the domain to find oddball incoming links and to also find possible hijackers. I found something on one of my sites that I find quite odd.

When searching this...

"mydomain.com" -site:mydomain.com

I get about 36 returns.

When I add the filter=0 (supplemental), I get 3,600 returns.

Is it really possible that all of these are really supplememntal? All of these returns are from different websites.

Just wondering if someone could shed some light on this!

Thanks!

Results that are filtered out, or grouped under "Omitted Results" are not necessarily Supplemental. That can be a wrong assumption. The only way you can be sure is to do a site: search for each domain and see if those urls are labeled "Supplemental Results" in green.

It is possible to have that many supplemental pages mentioning your url - and that's what the search you are discussing will return -- a pure character string match. There's no certainty that these urls in the results all hold links.

As to why you see these results - well, it smells a lot like scrapers.

Now this is very strange. I did the exact same search today and get 764 returns and when I add &filter=0 I get 784 returns... mmmm Must be in flux at the moment.

Thanks for the reply, tedster!

Links from supplemental urls may not help a whole lot, but they don't HURT.
