I agree, it's worth doing in a field where you want links from edu and gov sites.
I believe that you lose very few people to these links. A few doing research for a school or research project will use them. But most visitors are just glad to find the information in an short, easy to read form. If you can make it entertaining that's even better.
You will also get links from the casual visitors from their blogs and personal webpages. Those can be great links too.
Reprint has a great plan there. It's something I do to an extent but could do more.
