Hi,

I have a site which i launched almost 7 months ago, I have quite a few sites linking to me (this i check on google by entering my site name on search) however i still have a page rank of 0 and the link:sitename operator on google search returns no sites for me. The sites which link to mine have a pagerank ranging from 1 - 6, yet no luck. Can someone identify the problem for me?

There was a PR update about 3 months ago, so 2 things come to mind... Firstly, you may have received your links which are transferring PR after the cut-off for the PR update, or secondly you may have canonical issues [webmasterworld.com]. Do you have any PR when you enter your domain with & without the www?

Also, try using the link:www.example.com command on Y! for a more accurate backlinks count.

Hi Canuck,

I have links to my site for over 3 months now but only recently (definitely less than 3 months) have they begun to show in the google webmaster tool as external links to my site. There are roughly 56 of them. Are you also saying that PR updates can happen once in 3 months considering thats a real long period.?

The last two PR updates were approximately January 18 and April 25, so that's about 3 months between updates. So, we *should* be expecting a PR update in the coming few weeks, but you never know with Google...

Just a little more patience and your bright, shiny new website should have PR! ;)

rahul - First, welcome to WebmasterWorld.

The sites which link to mine have a pagerank ranging from 1 - 6, yet no luck. Can someone identify the problem for me?

When you say the "sites" which link to you, are you talking about their home page PageRank, or the PageRank of the linking page? It's the PR of the linking page which matters. Also, you need to be sure that the links that link to you do in fact transmit PageRank.

As mentioned here, ToolBar PR (TBPR) is generally updated only every few months, so you're not getting a real-time picture of what your current PR is.

For more about PageRank, check out the PageRank article that appears in our Hot Topics [webmasterworld.com] area that is pinned to the top of the Google Search forum's index page.

Hi Canuck / Robert, if you are still around, can you please guide me.

I think the google page rank update has finally happened and the link:sitename operator now shows 2 results for me.
1 from a page rank 6 link and 1 from one of the pages on my site itself (unranked).

However my page rank is still 0 for my main page which all the external links point to.

Is it still cuz of the lack of external links or should i expect to get ranked with even 1 page rank 6 external link?

rahul002,

The Tool Bar PageRank update has not happened yet. It appears to be going on now, but takes time before it is reflected in the toolbar for all domains.

Toolbar PageRank that gets updated every 3 months is not the same as the real PageRank that Google uses to calculate theri rankings for various search terms. Google updates "real" PageRank continually behind the scenes, and your rankings have nothing to do with the visible updates or any cut-off date.

The Google link: operator only ever shows a sampling of your backlinks. Again, you cannot depend on this.

If the search terms you hope to show up for are at all competitive, you will need many more links. And depending on how many links are on the PR6 page, it may well not be enough to move you above PR0.

In our Hot Topics [webmasterworld.com] area, which is always pinned to the top of this forum's index page, you will find several references that you should read. You have a learning curve to climb before this will make good sense to you.
