Today i have seen google back links updated following data center.

I thought there was no rhyme or reason to the backlinks shown so an increase or decrease in the amount of links shown means nothing?

googles webmaster tool is more accurate

googles link operator is worthless, might be what you're referring to.

yahoos link operator is the most accurate IMO

I think the number is meaningless, the direction is a good indicator.

Dont think it is... Ive seen sites attract more links since the previous update yet have a significantly lower number with the link command. I say its a total random number.

The link facility in googles webmaster tools does however provide a more detailed analysis for your own site, but even that isnt 100% based on the total link information google must have about a site.

If Yahoo can find the majority of a sites backlinks im sure Google can!

The number is far from random and has been discussed by a well known Google employee.
