Multiple 301 redirect chain - should I be worried?

Multiple 301 redirects

We just merged 2 websites into one this week and I have been checking the success of the 301 redirects. Using the nice RexSwain http viewer, I could see most 301s were working perfectly.

But I also noticed that several of the redirected pages went via a "jump" page and then the Jump page 301 redirected to the final destination. Should I be worried? My opinion is that only one 301 will pass link juice, but I haven't really had the experience and would rather forgo it if it looks to be an unpleasant one.

My experience agrees with your opinion. Backlink influence of almost every kind does not seem to pass through a chain of 301 redirects. Now, just maybe, it does ... eventually and after a long, slow incubation period. I would still bite the bullet and make the redirects go through one hop only. All those extra calculations cycles just don't sound healthy to me.
