Ok:

I have a site with approx 200 pages. At each page footer, I did have around 9/10 internal links (to different product pages etc), but started to think that this might look spammy.

I have just changed the footer so that there are only 6 links and this time have only linked to: About Us, Sitemap, Terms and Conditions, Message Board, Blog, External Resources. I am considering doing this with every page...

Will my change look better in the eyes of Google or would I have been ok leaving them as they were?

I honestly don't think that it will make a great deal of difference.

if having links to you own pages on the footer is problem then A LOT of site have troubles, trust me thats no problem, its simply not logic.
