Webmaster Tools site verification meta tag - leave it?

Should I leave the Google Webmaster Tools verification meta tag in place, or is it OK to remove it? I can't tell from the dashboard if Google periodically checks on it or not.

Google does check it periodically on my sites

I experienced Webmaster Tools asking me to verify again when I removed their HTML verification file. So leave it, meta tag or file.

They check over and over because site owners change.
