My main site was blown out of the serps last sept 22. Why remains a mystery to me and always will be. After I mopped up the puddle of tears from under my desk I decided never to rely on Google alone ever again and to make my site the way I wanted it without any compromises to suit ranking in the Google SERPS. My thought was if I make it to suit the visitor it will grow in time with natural linking from the little traffic it gains from Yahoo while I concentrated on other diverse projects to spread the income around. So far this is working.
On the 30th of last month I noticed a sharp increase in G referrals to this site and made a quick check on a few keywords and Hey Presto! - returned from the dead were around 150 KWs ranking where they used to in the top 10.
A little more digging and looking and I see that only 160 of the 1200ish pages are indexed. Strange, no server downtime or such that I knew of that could have caused it, so I take a quick look at the errors list at the google sitemaps page. Here i found a small list of errors. The seven or so directories in the list dated back to 2002. They have long gone, the site has moved server twice in that time so where has google found these?
As for supplemental pages, they seem to come and go at around the 20 or 30 pages mark, never any more, well not yet. The cache dates on the supps are all around Aug 2005 and the "normal¦" pages have cache dates of around the end of March / start of April.
Can anyone make sense of what is going on? Not that Im having sleepless nights over it, been there and done that and never going back. I'm more curious than anything to have some "expert" opinion as I seem to see so many factors in other threads all rolled into one here.
