I've done some research on this topic and the closest I can find to describing this issue is here [webmasterworld.com...]

What i've just witnessed is the main page of a site reverting to an old cached version and going supplemental in the index while all of its fairly extensive amount of content remains listed and non supplemental.

No changes were made however the content of the site was expanded. A new section covering new content which is relevant but different from the old. Like chevy and ford.

This particular site topic lends itself well to deep linking but poorly to main page links, its a content site. Most inner pages have more links incoming than the main page. Should the owner worry about impending SE doom for his site? PR ranges from 0 to 4 accross the content, its about a year old.

I've seen a couple of sites go PR0 on the homepage without having any deep links (except by scrapers).

I wouldn't worry as long as the site has a large number of indexed pages. Some pages will always go supplemental. So it happens to be the main page. So what? Easiest solution is to add a footer link on every inside page linking back to the main page.
