Should I 301 an entire site to my other site?

I have a "trusted" website generating a lot of traffic. The site is has about 10,000 links. My main site is closely related in subject matter to this site (also with about 10,000 links, so I am thinking about 301 ing the secondary site to a directory in my main site.

Would you say this was a wise move, or should I just continue to strengthen this site as a seperate domain?

The reason - I am a bit tired of the old site as a seperate brand.

you may risk a penalty as goog might choke on all th elinks (get suspicious.) If it's legit and you can explain, maybe warn them ahead via the webmaster central?

Sandpetra - I would also be very interested to get some feedback on this issue, as it is something I am thinking about too. Perhaps like others I got a bit carried away with purchasing domains and building content on them, but now it is getting out of hand, in terms of maintaining all of these sites in competitive positions on Google. I have one main site that is an authority in its field, and am considering redirecting all the other small domains into subdirectories on this big site. The small sites, however, have nice keyword targetted domains, and tend to do well in the other search engines (Y! and MSN) If I put them alll under one domain this would strengthen the branding and make administrating one site so much easier. But of course, it could all backfire! I'm at a loss what to do....
