webmaster tools not able to verify already verified sites

"Our system experienced a temporary problem while accessing verification data for some of your sites. Please try again later."

i've had this message for almost a week in my google webmaster tools - does this mean anything?

all the sites have already been verified months ago...

If you remove the verification tag or file, your verification lapses- it has to be continuous. (I guess this is in case of ownership change, or something).
I've found that webmaster tools sometimes has trouble verifying a site for a short while. I have no idea why.
Make sure your file (or tag) is still in place, then sit tight. That's about all you can do. It will get re-verified at some point.

i checked and everything is where it's supposed to be and it even will re-verify and give a success message but when going back to the dashboard i get the same error message

This has happened to me on occasion, but only for a day or so at a time. You could try contacting your web hosts to see if anything has changed; they could be denying access.
