Templated reciprocal linking facility

Any pitfalls?

I'm in the process of building a reciprocal linking page so that my client's customers can do the the typical copy/paste link code into their own websites. All the links will be templated such that the logo alt text will always have the same structure but will also include words specific to each customer, some of which are important keywords.

Anything I should watch out for in doing this type of thing? Will the customer-specific words make the text "natural" enough? Would it be beneficial to also add title attributes to the anchor and/or image tag with similar text?

Any comments appreciated.

From what I have seen, title attributes are still not included in the Google algo. They are however helpful for users in some cases, because they generate the tool-tip on compliant browers.

Thanks tedster.

Also wondering about backlink distribution. What's most beneficial? Spreading the backlinking across deeper, less important pages or setting it up so everyone links to the same, less deep but more important page? Or does it "all come out in the wash" in terms of PR provided my internal linking structure is logical?

Anyone?

Deep backlinks should point to important internal pages -- ideally to those pages that you would like to see as landing pages for search traffic or traffic coming directly through the link. That might be to a top level page in a subdirectory or it might be a specific offfering. I would prefer a bit of each.

It sounds like you must be in control of at least some of your backlinks. Use them naturally and don't change too many, certainly not anywhere near all of them. If you do, you may tip your hand that the sites are associated and that would devalue the links.
