One of my websites ranks number 2 on MSN for several keywords however doesn’t appear on Google SERP using the same words. The site is well designed including keywords in URL, Meta Tags, Header, Title however lacks having back links (one of the most important factors based on my experience).
I noticed getting referrals through MSN and some from Yahoo and almost none from Google. My site is listed on Google and most pages show up on page numbers > 5 on Google SERP.
Just wanted to share my experience and remind you guys the importance of back links.
I think Google is in love with Back Links. :)

I have a 2 year old website that is just now starting to rank with Google. I've completely cut Google dependency out of my business model, as free search traffic is becoming a luxury of the past from my experience.

Quality, quantity, it makes zero difference. Even authority websites are severely pruned in Google these days via the supplemental index.

I am looking at the SERP that has 9 positions out of top 10 that belong to same company that operates 16 websites and claims to do so for the greater Good. They market cheap left-overs from all over the world. All 16 sites are interlinked as a rule from the footer. Each site has about 30000 pages.

There many instances where this happens, where in many cases this company takes up to 12 positions out of top 20. And the widgets are exactly the same outdated junk. I know its junk because most of the Authority sites on our niche stopped caring these widgets 3 years ago.

I’ve been looking at this phenomenon trying, to learn from it. But at this point it’s just silly.

No, is NOT FARE

That's a good philosophy and one I follow too. Bottom line revenue is non-SERPS revenue IMO. Everything else is a nice bonus that can be taken away at any time.

Do it enough, and do not try to over-optimize, then You will have to de-optimize them again. You may read this on the Minus 950 penalty thread.

I am avoiding the penalty by:

- deoptimizing my pages: Lower keywords density, Omit meta keywords, less internal linking with spammy anchor text.
- Abandon the link page, and try to build one way link

Today, Google is becoming so complicated, and everyone can be banned any time though they did follow the Google guidelines.

In order to rank high on Google, I feel that we need luck.

Good luck.

As my recent research, I feel that Anchor text does not cause Minus 30 or 950 penalty because many of sites I studied have multi-keyword anchor text and navigation, but their rankings are still high.

any other ideas?
