How clever is Google with text colour over an image?

Does anyone have any knowledge about how Google reads white text on colour images? I've got a newly designed site which has straps of colour over the H1's. These coloured bands are images which are not given a width (so strect as wide as is required). It means that my H1's are white though..
Will Google realise what is going on or will they think I'm trying to deceive them with white text on white background? (if they can't see the image...)
The dilemma....

I work with several sites that use this effect - although all but one uses a hex color for the background and not an image. There has been no sign of trouble for any of them. I wouldn't expect any if both the color and the background (color or image) are set in a css rule for H1. That way either all the rules are read, or none of them are.
