I am struggling to understand why my site is difficult to find in google. The site has been established for a number of years and has a lot of content and many links to and from similar sites.

Something is very wrong, even a search of the company name yields nothing but content from other sites.

I have just taken on the management of the site and would appreciate any thoughts from you guys.

There's many possible reasons for a 'sick site'; the two to consider first are probably:

1. Your linking policy; be sure you are up to date with Google's guidelines.

Avoid random reciprocals, don't link to sites you wouldn't (really) recommend to your visitors, check that you are not linking to bad sites (they may have changed since you linked; always check links regularly.

2. Your content policy.

Is your content unique, well presented, with pages neither too big nor too small?

After those two, there's a plethora of other seemingly 'mild' symptoms, that, taken together, can put the kibosh on your site.
