Fixing a supplemental problem from "sort" pages

The vast majority of my site has "gone supplemental" (37,300 of 39,000 total results) and while some of the stuff belongs in there, much of it doesn't.

I realised a month back that because of how I was allowing users to sort pages, some duplicate content was being created, so I restructured how things worked (ie., stopped the sorting) and settled on one version of each page -- all other versions redirected via a 301 to the single version.

I figured this would remove the duplicate content issue and keep me out of oblivion.

Instead what has happened is that both the versions I was redirecting from and the pages I was redirecting to have all been marked supplemental, despite their being the only version on the site. The rsults have left me with very few pages at all in the main index.

These were pages that were previously ranking 1,2,3 for specific terms.

Looking for any advice on what I should can/do aside from sitting tight. Tks in advance.

The URLs that are now redirects will become Supplemental Results very quickly, and most of those will continue to show as Supplemental Results for a year or more.

That is the way it works.

That is NOT a problem, because wherever they appear in the SERPs you may get a visitor, and the redirect on your site will take that visitor to the correct URL for that content.

The URLs that now serve the actual content may take several months to show up as normal results again. That, too, is normal. Make sure that your internal site navigation and as many as possible of your external incoming links are pointing at those "real" URLs and not at any of the redirects.

Do not worry about redirects that show as Supplemental. They will, and there is nothing you can do to change that. Don't try to change that; you will harm your site.

Ok, that clears things up -- thanks for the prompt reply.
