A lot of members are seeing huge sites going supplemental. One of our main sites lots all rankings and 200,000 + pages disappeared and now we are left with 19k useless results. This could be a goof or it could be a new round of penalties. If you have had your site reduced to the 'sup index lets here about it and compare notes.
At the end of the day a lot of sites seem to have just 1 page listed now in the normal Google search.
Exactly, search for search engine optimization and use site:. Most of the sites just have their homepage left all other pages had dropped up or their old pages are back as supplemental results and google is still keeping big daddy live almost in all DCs.
So they think end users are not affected. I am personally affected badly by recent google results. It's difficult to find good articles, tools etc, since most of the high quality sites pages are gone.
- 4 yr old site / PR6
- Hand coded, nothing funny seo-wise
- 3,060 Supplemental pages (odd, as I think only have 2,000ish)
- Cache dates as old as January 2005 & old screenshot
- Unique Visitors down by 60-70% but heavy spidering (or something). This began mid-Feb
- AdSense impressions way down
- Pages do exist currently and have not been 301'd
- Approx 20% of our competition has also gone "Supplemental"
- Primary KW search dropped us to #36 from #16 (49 million results)
- Not all of our sites have been hit, though
It's gonna be a bumpy ride, mon!
Is it true that sites those had their home page cannonical issues have been penalized in the BD and its followers.
that is myth number 740. Only one thing I wan't to say. The recent drop out of pages of almost 50% of sites is a problem with google. I recommend not to panic at this situation and wait till google solves its problem.
remember the legitimate pages of your sites are the ones that is dropped. Your good pages are NOT MADE SUPPLEMENTAL.
The pages that are currently showing for site: for sites affected are pages which once might have existed on the server or got caught in duplicate content issue. Nothing to worry as of now.
On my site, most pages share a common template, header logo and navigation.
When I look at all the pages that are now listed as supplemental, they are listed as all almost the same identical size (28K) even though the are really quite different in size.
Is it possible that this is some kind of a page similairity glitch? Do others that are experiencing this problem use a common page template for your pages? Is it possible that someone has accidentally turned the page similairity content nob up so high that those with common template pages are being affected even though similairity may not be all that high? Is it also possible that it is only affecting those that don't serve the common template element from a CSS file?
I have looked at some of my competitors sites that use a common template for most pages and most of them do not appear to be suffering from this problem, so it is not an across the board thing, so something has to be causing this to happen to some site while not causing it on other sites.
This type of problem makes me wonder about the Google mantra "Design your site for your visitors and not for the search engines" It occurs to me that while Google is saying this, they are also forcing those of us that want to be even half decently ranked to design our sites to please Google.
but there should be enough text on each page for them not to be supps
however, it could be they have turned the dup content filter up a notch
in 2004 when the dup content thingy first came around I got blasted...and then came back
so could be that
who knows
But the main reason why pages go supplimental is that they are not getting crawled - not necessarily that the pages are of a poor quality, duplicates etc - always has been the case.
If the pages then get crawled and cached again the page no longer is supplimental - even if none of the onpage content has changed.
So to me it seems like a crawling issue - we know that the Big Daddy was largely a Mozilla Googlebot crawled index - perhaps there are issues with this crawl and Google are still working on this behind the scenes.
Some sort of progress report from G would be nice - but I doubt we will get one.
Same page same everything yet they are not supplemental and I am with original content. My whole site is except for home page. Traffic slammed and these coming to the top.
I think the reason for allot of this supplemental results is
I did find several scrapers and hijackers hitting my site and it really looks as this is the reason for the supplemental hit.
Boy has Google opened the door for honest web sites if this is the case. That post with the
?track=knoodle
this is a hijacker find out how it is set up were it is coming from as Google has opened the door for this to happen and it really looks wide spread...

Is your site new?
Does it have noarchive or anything like that?
Mozilla Googlebot is really pounding away today on my site - but I have no faith in this crawler.

Why do you think you may be supplimental?
Hijack, dup content, canonical - or dont know?

Few considerations:
- These sites do not use any tricks
- These sites did not do a link campaign
- these sites are genuine sites: some of them gained PR....
- These sites are a little bit suffering in rankings ( 10 % less in Google).
Only few "common" elements: they all recently changed hosting.
The hosting was different for all of them: different initial hosting, different new hosting.
Maybe google is considering the "age" of a site with reference to the last IP.
Maybe is only a temporary glitch ( I hope so )...
Again I ask...is anyone only seeing their index page listed? All of our other pages are not even supplemental.
If you don't have any supplemental pages then it is good news. you don't have any useless pages on your site according to google. SO is your homepage still ranking well. For all the sites affected their HOMEPAGE is still doing amazingly well with rankings. Their homepage ranking never changed a bit even after dropping all other pages from the index.
