I hope I'm posting this in the right forum. Here goes...

When a search is done in Google for one of our staff ("John Doe"), one of the top results is a bio page for John that currently resides on a popular industry-specific directory site. However, the page title that G lists in the SERPs is completely different from the actual page title. This may not sound like such a big deal, but G's inaccurate page title totally misrepresents the nature of John's business. John is not happy.

The folks who run the directory have asked G to fix it. I've been telling John to just be patient, etc. But the inaccurate page title has been appearing for about six months and the misinformation it conveys has no doubt been getting plenty of exposure.

My question -- Is is worthwhile to contact Google for these minor yet troublesome issues? My experience thus far has shown that these efforts are futile. Has anyone here ever barked up Google's tree for stuff like this and gotten satisfaction?

Google doesn't just make these titles up. The bots got that information from somewhere. THAT is what needs to be changed. Whatever page has the incorrect information needs to be tracked down, corrected and then build some links to it. Eventually G will pick up the new information and change the title. This will not happen overnite. It will move at a glacier's pace.
BTW...the purpose of the links is to speed up the process. The sooner G finds the new information..the sooner it will be corrected. Google does not hand correct according to your wishes. They would never be able to hire enough people for that.

Google search for the exact title as shown on the Google results and that might give you some clues as to where Google is getting it's title from.

have you examined the "popular industry-specific directory"?

Does their page have the same URL as Google?

Have they changed their entry recently?

Do they have duplicate entries for John Doe - use their site search.

It's a mistake; but I very much doubt it's Google's.

please keep us informed ...

It could be the ODP description, you can fix it with the no OPD meta tag.
