I am moving my site from shared to vps hosting, on the same host.
I am about to update the dns, and this question springs to mind:
Does the IP change make a difference to Google rankings in any way?

No.
Make sure, when you change the DNS, that you keep your old site up during the propagation and for some time after. This way, visitors (and Google) will see the site on one IP or the other, and the transition should be seamless.
