It has always struck me that amount of traffic from Google over a prolonged time was very similar per day.
I just wanted to ask if anyone else thought it strange and could it be the sign my site was being surpressed (ie by the number of referrals it gets from Google) becuase of some dubious links, poor structure etc?
The site in Q is has solid rankings.
Is it just that the terms I focus on actually do recieve that number of clicks on average per day via google or is it that that is how much traffic Google wants my site to get on a single day?
It is regularly updated and it holds a stabile ranking.
I suspect this gives the wrong impression. By stabile I mean within the top 10, and by regularly updated I mean new content is almost daily ranking within the top 10 for spcific keywords. I have by no means reached the potential of our targeted traffic.
I suspect the reason for that rolling peaks and troughs traffic graph may be quite obvious.
On Monday, people go back to work and the upward cycle starts again once they have access to their employers resources. By the end of the week, the downward cycle has started again and on week-ends people have things to do other than surf/use the internet.
I am in the travel and tourism sector and my sites as well as client sites all have this same traffic profile... its as regular as clockwork and I have yet to see one single site that varies from what I've just described.
I would not be surprised if one day we see employers starting to remove unlimited internet access.... its costing them a fortune.
Similarly, I can state with near-certainty that my traffic will reach a low in late November or early December and will take off like a rocket around New Year's. That's just how my site's traffic pattern goes.
Finally, I can tell you that, on any given Monday in the next month, I'll probably have X number of page views (give or take 5-10%) for an article on the island of Widget or the city of Whatsis. That isn't being "smartass," it's simply a statement of fact, and I'm sure that many other site owners would make similar observations.
If you're seeing wide swings in your own traffic (either overall or for specific pages), it may be the result of a small data sample.
