Significant Loss of Indexed Pages with site: operator

Hi,
Over the last month our site as had our number of indexed pages shrink from more than 10,000 to now just over 2000. We used the search site:widget:com to come up with these numbers.

What would cause this loss and is there a solution.

Most likely this is a reporting bug, in my experience. The site: results have been extremely volatile for many sites recently, even though their traffic remains relatively the same and does not echo those ups and downs.
