Has this been observed before? I went to remove a handful of pages with the URL removal tool. Everything went fine. The removal now shows in the console as "complete".

But the pages are still in the results. The only change is (wierdly) the "cache" link is no longer displayed when the page appears in the results.

Every other time I've done this the pages were out of the results with 12 hours. Do they have some new weird thing where they now refuse to delete URLs?

Do you see the "removed" pages still in the results of most of the DCs or on just few of them?

The pages show up on all datacenters.

This would definitely not be functionality that Google should allow to break -- I agree with you, once the removal tool said "complete", then in the past, very quickly the urls have always disappeared.

I can't imagine this would be an intentional breakage, but unintentional breakage has seemed pretty widespread recently. I sure do hope this isn't another case - it would be pretty severe.

Removed them all again after 24 hours, and now they are gone after about eight more hours.

Was this a robots.txt removal?

No, the single page way.
