I've been tracking the percentage of pages that are supplemental for my sites for a while. I've been using the following to get the counts.

site:www.example.com inurl:www
and
site:www.example.com -inurl:www

I never fully understood how the inurl:www works.

I recently added video pages to a couple of my sites and wanted to see if they were indexed. Naturally, the url contains the word video.

When I did a site:www.example.com, I could see the video page

When I did a site:www.example.com videos, I see the new video page listed as supplemental

If I do a site:www.example.com inurl:videos I get "your search does not match any documents"

In other words, the supplemental pages do not show results for inurl: searches. The method of finding out your supplementals with the -inurl makes sense now. In almost all sites (except with subdomains) you will have a www in the url.

So, the inurl parameter will work to filter out supplemental listings
