I know the www vs. non-www has been discussed a lot, but I have yet figured out the importance of this issue. How does this hurt my site? We are getting #1 result in the serps for our top keywords. The problem that I phase with this is my company has an extremely large site about 1,000+ static pages. We also have a lot of inbound links about 13,000 for non www and 7,000 with the www. Company has spent large amount of money for advertisement, and they had no idea of the www or non-www was an issue or they were not even aware of this. So they put out the page URL with the www on magazines, newspapers, etc. If our site is already getting #1 on our top keywords should I worry about this?

If you put the 301 redirect in place for "www" canonical purposes, then eventually backlink influence is no longer "split" into 2 piles - one for each url. This almost always generates more search traffic for the sites I've worked with, even the biggest.
