I am getting lots of new backlinks for a large variety of sites I monitor. Not on all DC's though.

It's been so long since I've tried a link: query that I wouldn't notice a change. Is there any value in this particular query these days?

Hmm also seems that they (once again) distinguish between www.example.com and www.example.com.au - I have found with my site that this use to be the case about 6 months ago, then they changed to show exactly the same amount of links for both addresses. Looks like they have changed it back

BTW - Both the .com and .com.au URLs point to the same site.

fyi - Vanessa Fox

we update both links data and anchor text once a month

[webmasterworld.com...]

I wonder if there is a visible update and an ongoing backlink update, similar to the PR updates [ visible versus invisible ]

Zaneta

Is you link still present on the back link pages?
Were they thematic?

May be google has disqualified those links for your website due to some reasons.

I have seen that google now recognises some of my backlinks for my new site (3 months old).

What should this mean for me?

yes i can see my site links in back links if you mean this
we try to have back links wtih same thematic with our site
is there any change in google rules for back links?
which ones you believe are more important?

The link: operator is something like the TBPR number - it's not in real time. It's also not a complete report. Google is using the links they find in their behind the scenes calculations almost from the day they find them. So by the time they change the link report, you've already been enjoying the fruits of those links in your rankings for a while.

>>What should this mean for me?

It means you're seeing something that Google's known about for quite some time and they've already incorporated this information into their results.

Yesterday, my backlinks went from showing 0 to 45 on some datacenters. Also, those datacenters showing 45 backlinks changed from a PR of 2 to a PR of 0. Today, all of the datacenters are showing 45 backlinks and only 2 of the datacenters show a PR of 2 - all the others show a PR of 0.....

Anyone have a clue about this? My toolbar shows a PR of 0. Yesterday it was 2.

Yeah, I came here to find out if anyone else had noticed a change in backlinks. I noticed a difference for my website.

What should this mean for me?

Tedster / BillyS - Thanks for the clarification.

I've had a good authority PR7 [TBPR ] backlink placed into a deep page and am itching to see what [PR ] effect it's having on that page. How long will i have to wait - this occurred over 4 months ago?

The last toolbar export of PR was mid-January, and that PR data may or may not have included your 4 month old link since it was on the cusp. W#e never know exactly when the "PR snapshot" is taken - only when it's visibly exported.

At any rate, Google averages a PR update every 3 months, but it's not like clockwork. So if they hold to that sort-of-a-schedule, we might see something in April. But if the link is 4 months old, you''ve already been seeing its effect on rankings for that page -- probably all year.

My website links also increased
Does this mean that soon there will be a PR Refresh also

Not necessarily - link: results are refreshed more often than toolbar PR.

Hmmm...

hey tedster

I have a website which was in process of getting published with content... getting that published/cached after this backlink update will affect on something?

I was getting a different set of back links for several days, but this evening it has reverted back to the old set on all of the data centers I checked?

I feel PR update will be soon in 1st week of April... what you say

frnd's blog just got to 4 PR from 0.
So this means we'll expect PR update within 2-3 days.

And by the way Google update PR of blogspot sites first?
I noticed this last time too. PR of blogspot sites was updated first.

I just dont see what the fuss is with this.

The backlinks number shown in google is a total random figure - just because the number of links is higher does not mean google has found more links, likewise if its lower it doesnt mean google has discounted links. Its a random figure!.

Having seen this number change for sites, up and down over the last few years i can honesty say its a meaningless figure and its done this way so that its harder for webmasters to copy other sites linking patterns.

Google finds all links to sites PDQ, if yahoo has a link to you listed chances are google will have already found it!

Pointless thread

Agree RichTC...

I know my backlinks have increased, but the figure shown has been decreasing for the third straight time. The PR also doesn't correspond with spidering frequency and traffic. Spider seems to be visiting more often and traffic is up by 200% since the same period a year ago, but PR and backlinks have decreased.

The effects from this (for me) is that I seem to have less direct advertisers, and it's also a bit difficult to get accepted into some revenue networks because they base their decisions on these random figures.

any backlink / indexed pages figures from the google search box are useless and have been for as long as i care to remember. maybe more than 5 years. the number you see is some extraction of the real figure taken at a point of time somewhere in the past. note google's intentional lack of any clarity!

all the people posting on this thread should start using google's webmaster tools. the backlinks shown in that are meant to be comprehensive and update regularly (perhaps even in line with the index..)

i honestly can't believe people still harp on about search box backlinks and toolbar pr. you are at least 2 years behind the game.

but.... i guess it makes this easier for my good self!

There is definitely an upcoming PR update in the 1st week of April. I would say a PR dance that will get stabilized by 10~15 April and that always-one-week-pre-PR-update back link update is the first sign.

Nope.. seems they are counting the same again now both the .com and .com.au
